NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara women’s lacrosse team has added twelve new players for the 2013 season, as announced by first-year head coach Wendy Stone.

Joining the team will be Elizabeth Benedict, Allie Bush, Gabby Gleason, Danielle Maio, Alexa Richardson, Stephanie Rogers, Jaclyn Schreiber, Selina Scutari, Kayla Smith, Aryien Stevens, Jordan Turpin and Kristen Winter.

“I’m very excited to announce the Niagara lacrosse class of 2016,” Stone said.  “They will add much needed depth in the midfield as well as shoring up holes left by the graduation of the class of 2012 on both ends of the field.  I’m expecting great things from these ten student-athletes on the field, in the classroom and within the Niagara community.

Benedict is the second individual from her family to attend Niagara, as her brother, sophomore Michael Benedict is currently a forward for the Niagara men’s hockey team.  The Nichols School graduate helped lead her team to the Midwest Schoolgirls Lacrosse Association Championship in 2011 after getting a taste of finals action the year before.  She was selected to the Western New York National Tournament Lacrosse Team in 2011 and will be a great asset on defense for the Purple Eagles.

Bush was a four-year all-league honorable mention during her time at Westhill High School. The Syracuse, N.Y. native served as captain during her senior season, receiving the Coach’s Award, as well as the Sportsmanship Award her final season as a Viking.

Gleason, a Vestal Senior High School graduate, will bring depth to either the midfield or defense for the Purple Eagles.  She helped lead the Golden Bears to a pair of Section IV Class B championships.  The Section IV All-Star was also a four-year field hockey participant, as well as played a season with the varsity men’s ice hockey team.

Maio was a three-year lacrosse varsity starter at Rush Henrietta.  The Rochester, N.Y. native led the team in point scoring his junior and senior year with 57 and 54 points, respectively.  Maio was a first team all-county honoree her final season, and a second team all-county recipient as a junior.  She was named to the 2011 Under Armour National Team and the Upstate New York National Team in 2010.

Richardson comes to Monteagle Ridge after graduating from Hendrick Hudson in Montrose, N.Y.  Her sophomore year she was tabbed most valuable player, and as a result served as captain the following year.  She was an all-league honorable mention honoree her junior year, before earning all-league accolades after her senior campaign.
