Doug Shanahan and Kathleen Mikowski to be inducted into Hofstra Athletics Hall of Fame

Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra University Department of Athletics has announced the Hall of Fame Class of 2013. The class includes seven individual representing eight sports, as well as two teams. Doug Shanahan from Men’s Lacrosse and Kathleen Mikowski from Women’s Lacrosse are two of the seven individuals being inducted.

The group will be inducted at the 2013 Athletics Hall of Fame Dinner on Saturday, April 13, 2013, in the Hofstra University Club at 4 p.m. The inductees will also be recognized during halftime of that night’s men’s lacrosse game against the University of North Carolina.

Doug Shanahan – A standout football and men’s lacrosse student-athlete, Shanahan was a four-year letter winner for both programs between 1998 and 2001 and is the first two-sport, two-time All-American in Hofstra Athletics history. A three-time All-American in lacrosse, Shanahan was also named the top player in the sport as a senior when he earned the inaugural Tewaaraton Trophy. He was also the recipient of the 2001 Lt. Raymond J. Enners Award as the Division I Lacrosse Player of the Year and the 2001 Lt. Donald J. McLaughlin Jr. Award as the Division I Midfielder of the Year. Shanahan scored 95 goals and 44 assists during his career, ranking ninth and 12th, respectively, on Hofstra’s all-time lists. He also scooped up a school record 450 ground balls. On the gridiron, Shanahan posted 279 tackles and 13 interceptions from his free safety position. He returned five interceptions and fumble recoveries for touchdowns and earned All-America honors in 2000 and 2001. He was a part of six NCAA Tournaments during his tenure, three in football and three in lacrosse including a quarterfinals appearance in 2001. Following graduation, Shanahan was a member of the United States World Lacrosse Team in 2002 and 2006, earning MVP honors at the 2002 World Championships. Shanahan was picked by the New York Lizards as part of the 2013 MLL Supplemental Draft. Shanahan  teaches at Pine Crest Preparatory School in Ft.Lauderdale (FL). He is a teacher and the head boys lacrosse coach.

Kathleen Mikowski – A women’s lacrosse student-athlete for four years (2000-03) and a three-year (1999-01) member of the women’s soccer team, Mikowski was a two-time All-American on the lacrosse field and is Hofstra’s all-time leading scorer with 240 points. She ranks first in career goals with 183, fifth in assists with 57 and second with 148 ground balls. Her 57 goals during the 2003 season rank as the highest single season mark in Pride women’s lacrosse history. One of just four players in program history to earn All-America honors twice, she was also a three-time all-region and All-America East selection as well as the 2000 America East Rookie of the Year. As a midfielder on the soccer team, Mikowski recorded four goals and five assists in her three seasons.
