Women’s Lacrosse: #7 Orange Extend Winning Streak Against #12 Cornell

No Comments 18 April 2017

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior Devon Parker and junior Riley Donahue recorded five points apiece to lead No. 7/8 Syracuse to an 11-8 victory against No. 12/11 Cornell in the Carrier Dome. The win was the fifth straight for the Orange, which improved their record to 13-4.

“That was a really good Cornell team and they gave us a battle,” said Syracuse head coach Gary Gait. “Luckily, our defense stepped up in the second half and really came through for us, backed by (goalkeeper) Asa Goldstock, who had another tremendous day.  Anytime we’re over 50 percent on saves, you have a chance to win the game. I know their senior goalie played amazing and had a ton of saves as well. So it was really a battle of defenses and goalies today. Some our players stepped up and made plays to give us the lead. I thought we finished the game pretty well today. That last 10-12 minutes, we got some separation and were able to kill some time at the end of the game and get the Upstate ‘W’ there.”

HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Cornell scored the first goal of the game and led for the majority of the first half, but couldn’t pull away. The Big Red (10-3) led 5-3 before Donahue assisted on Parker’s goal at the 4:19 mark and then picked up a ground ball on the right side of the crease off a shot from Neena Merola and placed the ball inside the near post with 6.5 seconds remaining in the first half to tie the score at 5-5.

Parker struck first after intermission to give the Orange their first lead of the game, but Cornell quickly responded on Sarah Phillips’ goal to tie the game for the fourth time. After Goldstock forced a Big Red turnover, junior Alie Jimerson scored on a pass from redshirt freshman Mary Rahal off a restart to give Syracuse the lead for good. Jimerson’s goal was the first of four straight for the Orange as they took their largest lead of the game at 10-6 at the 16:8 mark. Jimerson scored twice while Donahue and Rahal each had a goal and assist during the run.

Cornell scored with 58 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 11-8 and won the ensuing draw control, but Goldstock made two saves on Cornell free-position attempts in the final 26 seconds to secure the win for the Orange.

OF NOTE
Parker led the Orange with three goals, while Donahue had two goals and three assists. She now leads the team in points (52) and assists (21) and is tied for the top spot in goals (31).

Goldstock, this week’s ACC Defensive Player of the Week, reached double figures in saves for the second straight game and fourth time this season. She also caused two turnovers and had a ground ball.

UP NEXT…
Syracuse goes on the road for its regular-season finale at Louisville on Saturday, April 22 at 1 p.m. A win against the Cardinals would give the Orange at least a share of the ACC regular-season title.
